Period 7 Declarations of Independence Discussion Threads
Period 7:
Below you will find questions to which you should reply (as well as replying to classmates' comments) to discuss how the song, poem, and video represent effective, unique, and individual declarations of independence.
We have the right to life, liberty, and freedom. This means that the text that is enclosed within the declaration basically states what it means to be an American and how we as individuals can make our lives what we want it to be. etc.
Jessie In these declarations of independence, I notice that each of them expresses freedom and having the right to be free. Also, I think these declarations talk about how we have a right to live, which is a great thing to have. Freedom and having the right to live, and to have our countries rights is very important and valuable. Americans are free, we are a free country, and that's what it means to be an American.
They all say that the people have to be a right to be free just like in america. like in the song it says that she can survive and be free without the help of someone else. she doesn't need anybody to lean on. in the video it says that apple will make people free and stop them from being controlled. in the poem it says how he says how he has the right to like and do his own things. he is free and can do what he wants. all these things relate to america cause in america everyone has the right to be free and like what they want. MIkey CAvanagh
Because as Americans we have natural rights that grants us independence like how in the apple computer apple said the Macintosh would stand alone from all other computers and related it to George Orwells 1984 were the government controls everything and they said in the apple commercial that 1984 wont seem like 1984 meaning that apple will be independent from every other commercial. - My name is Matt

For the song, it talked about how you can survive after a bad relationship. to me the singer represents America when they say " you're not welcome anymore." This represents how we basically said that Britain wasn't welcome here anymore and that we wanted them to leave! Also when the song said, " you think I crumbled" or, "you think I'd lay down and die" that means that we knew that Britain would expect us to just give up and let them win. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the video, I thought that the video screen with the man talking could represent Britain and the people watching were the colonists before the revolution. The person who ran in would represent the founding fathers and how they fought against the British (or the man on the screen in this case) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the poem, it talked about how the child (who is black during the segregation era) is writing a paper. This represents how America was fighting against Britain for their independence. The poem says "I guess being colored doesn't make me NOT like the same things other folks like who are other races" This shows how like America, the boy saw no difference between other countries. (something Britain failed to see). This caused the revolution in America and in this poem, it is the boy making a revolution against segregation.
as far as being american the song showed that we have the right to do what we want. The poem also did a great job of showing independence for african americans. It showed that while the author was black he had his independence in america and he expressed his rights. The comercial shows that we have independence of choice and independence from "bad computer manufactures."
It means that we have certain rights as Americans. We have the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. In each "declarations of independence" they all talk about breaking free and independence. IN the song, she sings about breaking free and surviving. In the commercial, he goes against what everybody is doing and tried to stop it. In the story, he talks about how he is colored and he doesnt think he is any different from anybody else. - Sir Kush Qorpog 3000inator Doshi XVII
When we listened to that song I Will Survive, Shes saying that she will survive, shes having faith in herself. Also that video link 1984, Woman athlete throwing ax at controlling theater so those people don't haft to listen to the guy that's telling them what to do. ~ Ryan P.C.
To be an American: In the song being an american means they have the right to make your own choices and to live by your own rules. And the the poem an american means to be free to have the ability to like what you like and to not have anyone else tell you otherwise. Annika Lundgren
I believe that all americans have certain rights, no matter the color of their skin (text 1 and 2) their religion (text 2) etc. In the video, there is a different idea of independence, not necesarilly about being independent from a person, but more so being independent from a group and taking control of what you have control over (Do you really have control over everything?!). To be an American means that you can do what you want, be who you want to be, speek/ express your feelings the way you want to UNDER CERTAIN RULES. Americans have independence, but they abuse it, even if one is abusing it to make a change (Rosa Parks abused her power on the bus, but look what that started and the change that made!). In other words, Americans have the right to change, or to try to make a change (this covers all three texts/video). For example, the poem is stating that many people think that white americans are better than colored americans when, in reality you are "a part of me as I am a part of you".
What is unique about the word choice (diction) and nuance of each piece? (think mood, tone, deeper word meanings, and other reasons for word choice to help you respond). Comment by replying to this question.
the word choice of the song that we heard, showed independence. The words that caught my attention was "I will survive". Those words show that you don't need any specific person to live a good life. You can have your own independence. The mood also showed a lot of independence. -Sara
Each of the “declarations” were unique in how they represented independence.
The song tells the story of a women breaking free from a relationship. Using figurative language she tells the story of her relationship and how she broke free from it. In the commercial the women, depicted as an upbeat and happy character represents Apple computer. She runs thru a room filled with dull looking men, different from her in a gender sence, and physically destroys there controller. This represents Apple computer being different or independent from other computer companies with the same product.
The song is different from the commercial because she uses figurative language to represent something physicl. Contrary to that the commercial uses physical actions to represent something figurative.
I like how you explain your point of view. Also, how you describe what the song was about in a way that shows how a woman gained independence. -Michael Floats your boat Williams fitsgerald mimmacotti with cheese Hart.
Jessie For the word choice in the song, I think that the words, survive, life, and free are perfect examples of independence. I chose these words because, our country has rights to live, and to be free, which is important to think about while considering our rights.
In the poem the start, which said "and let that page come out of you" says that the paper that the boy is writing is going to come out of him. This has a couple different meanings. One, it could mean the feelings of the boy. Second, it can mean the physical attributes to the boy. For example when he says "I am the only colored kid in my class" it shows how the child is actually singled out in his class and by the way he wrote it, it means that he doesn't really care about it. Also it shows how the boy writes "yet a part of me, as I am a part of you. That's American" This shows how the boy knows that there is no difference between races, this leads to the whole meaning of the poem, which is that there is no difference between anyone in the world.
The word choices of each piece were unique because in both the song and the commercial the word choices show self-righteousness and the need to stand up for ones rights and beliefs. The word choices in the poem showed honesty in how the world was and how by writing something from your mind can show independence. -Alessandra Santangelo
In the song the author repeats the the saying, "I will survive". This is repeated purposely because she wanted to show she didn't need anyone to control her anymore. She wouldn't "crumble". She can now be independent on her own. Annika Lundgren
In the song she is very certain and assertive in what she is saying meaning she knows what she wants and how she is going to change it. In the song she says "walk out the door, 'cause your not welcome anymore" this is her realizing she doesn't need anyone to "hold her hand" while she goes through life because she can do it by herself. -Alexa Gibbs
the song is presented very strongly so it makes you feel it more. it is presented very strongly so it makes you feel it more of what she is talking about and how she really wants to be independent. the video is dark and gloomy which makes you feel it well to cause when the girl in all color come in it stands out. Mikey Cavanagh
In the poem some of the words, like "That's American". The deeper meaning of american is freedom. Because the author was a colored man in 1951, when he said "Sometimes perhaps you don't want to be a part of me. Nor do I often wan to be a part of you. But we are, that's true!" The deeper meaning, they are all american; freedom, that's what they each have a part of them. Being American means they each have their own freedom and this is what makes them equal, free and independent. Annika Lundgren
That video link we watched "1984" was unique when the women athlete had the courage to go to that controlling theater with people chasing after her behind her. She had independence when she through that ax to stop those people from listening to the guy that was telling them what to do. This is what I thought that was unique about the video link. ~Ryan P.C.
In the first text, the reader could guess (even though it said) that the person writing this was younger and less mature compared to the second text which was definitely more mature and educated. In the first text, the author used lots of different subjects and confused them to make the reader understand that we are all the same. In the second text, the author wasn't addressing the reader as much as he was addressing "Fellow Cleregymen". The word use in the second text was more educated and mature, but also had the feeling of calmness and an openminded idea. The video was alling to an audience, making a change, and addressing the topic at hand without going into a lot of detail. The meaning of the words in the video is that you, as americans, have the choise to change and to have freedom. I felt that the two texts and the video all had similar meanings, but had different ways of addressing the audience.
It makes it unique because it was a song showing how people can have their independent rights. Also it shows how they can live a happy life, without anyone putting them down. As the song "I will survive" was playing, the author wanted to declare independence and show how women have their own rights. -Sara
in the video the author makes everything black and white. so it looks very dull. then it shows the girl thats in all color which makes her stand out and get noticed. it shows that she is independent and has the right to dress this way. that she has the right to think different sand be free. MIkey Cavanagh
The video was unique because they used images and color. The girl in the video had bright colors unlike everyone else. She was different because she had the independence and the freedom to chose what she wore. Compared to the others who was forced to wear the dull colored clothing. She didn't want to be controlled.
In the song, the author purposley chose to repeat "I will survive" to push the independence. To show they are now independence and they can be on there own. -Annika Lundgren
The song was possibly structured to be about a person leaving another person, but then showing up and asking for the other person to take them back. A deeper structure is that anyone can stand on their own and not have to take orders from anyone else. They are able to be happy when in a time of misery. The commercial was structured to make it seem like the whole time period was going to change just because of the very first apple product. The commercial was grey except the girl that was running with the hammer. She represented an new and independent item in a world that followed the same thing and was boring. The poem was structured as a college assignment to the student. He was told to go home and just write about himself. ~Monica
Jessie I feel that the way the declaration was explained was unique. In the video, it shows a new product being released. the way that independence is shown is that, the product is going to make something easier for people, and having less problems makes you more independent.
All these forms of independence are unique because authors choose to use different forms of art to express their idea. Apple made a commercial with only black and white colors and they had one person stand out and that person wasn't black and white. The artist of the song decided about her declaring independence. That is what makes all of this unique.- Kush Doshi
These are different from eachother because of the way they are addressed. The audience for the first one could be anyone, but the audience for the second one is the clergymen. For the video, the audience is anyone, but unless they analize the video, they most likely will not compare it to independence. They are also unique because of the message. The messages are similar, but I felt like the apple video did not send as strong of a message of independence as the poem.
All three state a sense of independence in different ways. Even though the original is being independent from a government, the song, poem, and commercial are becoming independent from a different perspective. The song is clearly about being an independent person and not needing anything/anyone else to be able to live their life. The commercial is about breaking away from what the "normal" is during that time period. The poem is that even though he is the only colored student, he has the same rights as the rest of the students in his class. ~Monica
These "declarations of independence" are similar to the declaration of independence because they are all saying that they don't like how their life was or how they were treated and now they are "fed up" and want a change. For example, in the song Gloria is saying she thought she wouldn't be able to live without being in a relationship or in love with someone but then she realized she doesn't need a relationship ands she will be able to "survive" single. Also, in the Apple commercial the woman is trying to show people that they should be different and not try to be like everyone else and they should be their own person. And in the poem Langston is saying even though he is colored he is still like everyone else even though he is a different color but he can still like the same things other people even if they are a different color from him.
these declarations are the same because they talk about freedom like in the poem he says what schools he went to and that shows freedom because he went to school with all white people and he is African American. nick velardi
independence from specific things like in the song we will survive the singer sings about independence from men saying we don't need men. Or in the poem THEME FOR ENGLISH B he talks about being independent and equal as African Americans and Langston Hughes also mentions freedom. lastly the apple commercial focuses on independence saying that apple computers will stand apart from other computers. - My name is Matt
Jessie In the poem, one person is talking about his freedom, which is discussed in the declaration of independence. He is a different color, but to him it doesn't matter, he is happy that he's different and free. In the declaration of independence, we have a right to be free no matter what color you are, and everyone in our country is allowed to have the same rights.
they all talk about how everyone has the right to be free. like in the poem it says how all people have the right to think they want. That he has thew right to be happy he is independent and just cause he is an African American doesn't means he cant think about the same thing as others. just like in the original document which says everyone can be happy and free. Mikey Cavanagh
Theses declarations have similarities to the first and original, Declaration of Independence. It says they have the right to be free. Also they both also talk about what they each did wrong, and have the explanation of way they don't need anyone to help them stand, they could do it on their own. Just like the song it explains how she doesn't need to be in a relationship in order to survive. Annika Lundgren
The origional declaration stated independence, but it also stated why the colonists wanted to be independent from britain. This was on a much bigger scale than these texts and the video. The Texts (both) was asking for independence being prejudged because of the color of one's skin. The video was asking for independence from those who follow in the footsteps of other companies/ groups. Both the texts/video and the origional declaration are asking for independence but just in completely different ways and for completely different reasons.
The Declaration of Independence is unique because it shows are nations specific set of independence regulations per say. Michael Allen Swirksy Port Jefferson Ferry Hart.
I think these "declarations of independence" all share a common idea of the original because they all speak of freedom in their own unique ways such as being your own person, standing up for yourself, and having freedom of speech. -Alessandra Santangelo
They all share the same idea. All of them speak of freedom, and independence. You have to stand up for yourself, and also believe in yourself. Don't let other people bring you down.
What could each of the "declarations of independence" say about what it means to be an American? Respond by replying to this question.

DeleteTheses declarations have similarities to the first and original, Declaration of Independence. It says they have the right to be free. Also they both also talk about what they each did wrong, and have the explanation of way they don't need anyone to help them stand, they could do it on their own. Just like the song it explains how she doesn't need to be in a relationship in order to survive.

DeleteI think these "declarations of independence" all share a common idea of the original because they all speak of freedom in their own unique ways such as being your own person, standing up for yourself, and having freedom of speech. -Alessandra Santangelo
ReplyDeletewe can all be free, and have our own rights.-Sara
ReplyDeleteThey all share the same idea. All of them speak of freedom, and independence. You have to stand up for yourself, and also believe in yourself. Don't let other people bring you down.
DeleteThey all try to get their point across. They are all declaring independence from something. - Sir Kush Doshi
