Period 1: Photo Day pictures will be taken on Monday, 9/9. Quotation poster is due Monday. We will be reviewing the grammar diagnostic and using these quotations to begin our writing journals. Stories that will be read this week include "The Lady or the Tiger" by Frank Stockton, a story by Edgar Allen Poe, "The Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving and "The Devil and Daniel Webster" by Stephen Benet to begin our unit on "What it means to be American."
Due Thursday: Finish "The Lady or the Tiger" and answer the following questions (minimum 1/3 page total between them)
1. What is the lesson/moral/point of this story? (what is the author trying to say?)
2. Who or what is the cruelest in this story?
Periods 3 and 5: Know for Sure essay is due on Wednesday. We will be discussing the new common college application essay questions on Tuesday and Wednesday and transitioning to our unit on Narrative writing.

We will be reviewing the grammar diagnostic and using these quotations to begin our writing journals. Stories that will be read this week include "Jump Away" by Rene Saldana, a story by Edgar Allen Poe, and "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry.
Due Thursday: "Jump Away" by Rene Saldana. For the story, respond to the following questions (total writing should be roughly 1/3 to 1/2 page)
1. What is the author's point/lesson/moral for this story? (what is the author trying to say/show?)
2. Is it believable? Why/Why not?
Due Friday: Finish "The Cask of Amontillado" and complete the worksheet of questions. I will be looking for you to prove your thinking as I will be asking questions to challenge your insights to help you delve deeper.
